Combating Climate Change and Environmental Approach

Sustainable production targets for climate change

The main goal of combating climate change is to limit the global temperature increase to 2°C and then keep it below 1.5°C within the framework of the Paris Agreement, which is based on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and aims to regulate the climate change regime. The climate crisis, with its increasing severity, necessitates multilateral cooperation and joint efforts on a global scale. The 29th Baku Conference of the Parties (COP29), held in Azerbaijan at the end of 2024, points out to the need for countries to strengthen their emission reduction commitments.

At Aromsa, we consider combating climate change not only as a responsibility but also as a strategic priority. We aim to create a production model that provides solutions to combat climate change and supports the transition to a low-carbon economy. In this context, we evaluate the risks and opportunities brought about by the climate crisis and take action for effective risk management.

In line with Türkiye’s 2053 Net Zero Carbon target, we calculate our carbon footprint and set our reduction targets to reduce carbon emissions from our activities. We take the necessary precautions in our facilities in line with environmental management systems and standards. We implement environmentally friendly practices in our processes through our comprehensive R&D and innovation projects, and we continue our sustainable product development efforts without slowing down. We stand out with our education and awareness campaigns to raise awareness about climate change in society, especially among our employees and suppliers, which are our key stakeholders.

As Aromsa, we established our climate strategy in alignment with Türkiye’s 2053 Net Zero Carbon Target and developed our climate action plan within this framework.

ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACH

Aromsa’s sustainability policy is based on an integrated environmental management approach that encompasses many elements such as the protection of natural resources, reduction of carbon footprint, sustainable production, use of renewable energy and the dissemination of environmental awareness throughout the organization.

Our environmental sustainability approach is shaped by the following principles.

Target Setting and Strategic Planning: Short-, medium- and long-term targets are determined to improve environmental performance. The determined environmental KPIs are monitored regularly.

Efficient Use of Resources and Waste Management: Efficient use of energy, water and raw materials is encouraged. The principle of minimum waste is followed in production processes and other activities. We reduce waste generation at its source and develop projects to increase the recovery rate.

Priority is given to projects and collaborations that comply with the circular economy principle.

Water and Wastewater Management: While water consumption is reduced, environmental impact is minimized through rainwater harvesting and water efficiency projects. Treatment, reduction and reuse are essential in wastewater management.

Renewable Energy Efficiency: In line with the energy management strategy, priority is given to renewable energy investments. With the ISO 50001 Energy Management System, systematic improvement of energy performance is achieved.

Combating Climate Change: Carbon footprint is calculated and monitored. Reducing carbon emissions is among Aromsa’s sustainability goals.

Protection of Biodiversity and Natural Balance: Special attention is paid to procure environmentally friendly raw materials.

Environmental Management Systems: ISO 14001 Environmental Management System is actively implemented. Environmental performance is regularly reviewed and improvement activities are carried out.

Full Compliance with Legislation: With a risk-based approach, environmental impacts are identified in advance and proactive measures are taken. The principle of full compliance with legal regulations is observed in all activities.

Training and Awareness: All employees are given environmental awareness and sustainability training. Projects that will raise awareness within and outside the organization are supported.

Environmental sustainability and energy management activities

Our Environmental Sustainability Roadmap

In order to create our environmental sustainability roadmap, we first conducted a current situation analysis and risk assessment study regarding the environmental impact of our operations. In this regard, we have carried out an environmental dimension-impact analysis within the scope of ISO 14001 by creating a detailed inventory of our environmental impacts such as carbon emissions, water consumption, waste generation, air and water pollution, etc. The Corporate Footprint Inventory, which we have been reporting since 2013, is prepared and verified annually. We identified our environmental risks and opportunities through internal and external impact analysis and assessment of stakeholder expectations, while taking into account compliance with national environmental legislation.

Within the scope of energy management, we prioritize energy efficiency, renewable energy use and green building investments.

In order to increase energy efficiency and reduce our emissions, we have established the ISO 50001 Energy Management System and achieved certification as of 2023. In line with our energy saving goals, we have installed analysers at all applicable consumption sources to monitor water and energy consumption as part of the digital transformation project.

We continue to expand our renewable energy infrastructure with new solar power plant investments. In addition to the solar power plant we installed for the first time on the roof of our Aromsa 6 factory building in 2020, we completed the solar power plant installations on the roofs of the Aromsa 1 Factory building in 2023 and the Aromsa 7 Head Office building in 2025.

As part of our green building investments, we carry out the construction and renovation of our facilities by taking into account the LEED certification requirements developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Two of our buildings received LEED Platinum Certification in 2020 and 2021. We design our new investments as green buildings, aiming for LEED certification.

Within the scope of water management, we are designing projects for conservation of water, use of rainwater, efficiency of wastewater treatment plants, reduction of wastewater and reuse of water. We are working on establishing a Water Management System.

In addition to the existing rainwater collection systems in all our locations, we contribute to the protection of our water resources by using filtered rainwater for garden irrigation, reservoirs and well water feeding areas.

We closely follow developments regarding environmentally friendly production processes and evaluate cooperation opportunities with international initiatives. We take part in sustainability platforms such as RSPO, Sustainability Academy and Ecovadis.

Environmentally focused volunteering activities

Through our Aromsa Sustainability Committee, which consists of representatives from different departments of our company, we ensure the active participation of our employees in decision-making processes and create opportunities to benefit from different perspectives in project development stages.

We establish communication platforms with our business partners in our supply chain to develop joint projects on topics such as sustainable material use and carbon footprint reduction.

Environmental Training and Awareness Activities

We consider it among our fundamental responsibilities to increase the environmental awareness of all our stakeholders. We interact with our stakeholders, especially our employees, to raise awareness about preventing waste of resources and their efficient use and handling.

In order to increase environmental awareness throughout the organization, we provide Environmental Orientation Training to every employee who just started working at Aromsa. We ensure that all our employees attend annual environmental training to refresh their knowledge. The refresher training covers topics such as basic environmental knowledge, energy saving, waste management and carbon footprint. We aim to raise awareness by ensuring that environmental issues are included within the scope of the ‘30 Minute Meetings for Development’ organized by our Human Resources department.

We organize events with the voluntary participation of our employees on special days such as Environment Day and Water Day.

In 2024, on June 5th, World Environment Day, we participated in the ‘Cleaning Awareness and Environmental Walk’ event in Denizli Pond with our volunteer employees in cooperation with the Gebze District Governorship, Gebze Municipality, Gebze Technical University and 6 organized industrial zones and supported the cleaning of the pond’s surroundings.

In 2024, we organized a photo contest with the theme ‘Water for Peace’ for World Water Day on March 22. A total of 19 of our employees participated in the contest with 52 photographs, and we rewarded the most popular photographs at the ceremony held on May 29th.

In 2023, during the school semester break, we hosted 80 children between the ages of 6 and 12 at Aromsa for our ‘For a Sustainable World’ event for three days, and carried out an interactive activity where they could learn while having fun.
