Waste Management and Circular Economy

Waste management and recycling practices

SDGs We Contribute to

Aromsa

Within the scope of our environmental goals, we take the necessary measures in our product development, production, supply and quality management activities to minimize the amount of waste, reuse any waste generated, safely recycle waste or support its recovery.

“Prevention of waste before it is generated” is the principle that guides our waste management and circular economy policies. At Aromsa, waste management is part of the Company culture.

Accordingly;

  • Production processes are optimized to maximize the conversion of raw materials into products.
  • Processes that will create minimum waste and loss in production are selected.
  • All waste is classified as hazardous/non-hazardous, recyclable/non-recyclable at its source.
  • Recyclable waste is sent to licensed companies and reintroduced into the economy.
  • Certain packaging materials are recovered for reuse.
  • Cleaning and rinsing water is used as secondary water in certain production steps.
  • Awareness campaigns and trainings are organized for employees on waste reduction.
  • Waste reduction ideas conveyed by employees are evaluated and rewarded through suggestion systems.

We sort all kinds of waste generated as a result of our activities into household waste, packaging waste, electronic waste, hazardous waste and non-hazardous waste, according to their types.

We separate hazardous waste from other types of waste at the source and store it in special collection areas. We send recyclable chemicals such as solvents and oils to licensed recycling facilities. We regularly report all hazardous waste quantities and disposal operations to the relevant system of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.

Circular Economy

Considering the rapidly increasing resource consumption and high amount of waste generated by industrialization, we support the transition to a circular economy, i.e. a production and consumption model that involves using, renewing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible, in contrary to the linear economy model of “buy-use-dispose.”

The production model of ‘reduce-reuse-recycle’ offered by the circular economy encourages innovation and industrial symbiosis initiatives in the food industry, where a significant amount of by-products are generated during product processing.

As Aromsa, we minimize our raw material waste that may occur during production thanks to systems that operate with the principle of correct dosage and less waste in production, while we carry out R&D studies to re-use the by-products formed in our production processes.

With the innovative studies we conduct on whey beverages in our Aromsa Milk and Dairy Products Laboratory, we enrich dairy product formulations with fruit peels that have a certain amount of fibre content. We use cocoa nib pulp, which is a by-product of cocoa extract, in our flavoured sauces after putting it through certain processes.

Circular economy-oriented waste management strategy

As part of our collaboration with Wastespresso, we support a production process that respects the nature and people by recycling coffee waste. During the reporting period, we recycled 826.56 kg of coffee waste and prevented the release of 829.24 kg of CO2e greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. In this way, we achieved savings equivalent to the carbon footprint that would be created by the following activities:

330.9litresof gasolineconsumption 300.89litresof dieselconsumption 349.89kgof coalconsumption 170,555.22phone charges 1,876.11KWhof electricityconsumption 3,358.42m2Afforestation ofof land 35.66Recycling of household waste in the amountof 35.66 largegarbage bags 48.93Replacement of48.93 incandescentbulbsbulbs with LED

We know that raw material waste in the food industry can be used as raw material in similar or different industries. In this context, in order to contribute to the circular economy, we continue our work on biotechnologically processing the food production waste we obtain from inside or outside the factory within the scope of our production activities and reusing it in different product groups.

We prefer packaging made from the highest percentage of recycled materials.

We value the potential of industrial symbiosis initiatives within the scope of waste management and circular economy. In the upcoming period, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to reuse organic waste from Aromsa production as raw materials in other industries by establishing collaborations with other industrial organizations.

“Our long-term collaboration with Aromsa has made it possible to give coffee pulp a second life. As part of our circular economy-oriented collaboration, we have transformed 2,100 kg of coffee pulp generated in Aromsa offices into alternative raw materials as of September 2023, when we launched our From Bean to Green project, and together we have prevented 2,071 kg of CO₂e emissions from entering the atmosphere. While our collaboration provides tangible contributions to recycling and carbon reduction targets, we strengthen our vision of generating long-term environmental benefits in line with Aromsa’s sustainability approach. We sincerely thank Aromsa, a key partner in this journey sharing our sustainability vision, for their valuable support and long-term cooperation which is based on mutual trust.”
