Water and Wastewater Management

Projects to reduce water use intensity

SDGs We Contribute to

Aromsa

While global population growth and rapid industrialization increase global water demand, clean drinking water, our basic source of life, faces an unprecedented danger of depletion due to the effects of climate change and intense pollution. The climate crisis and the increasingly scarce access to potable water are among the most important risk factors for food security and sustainability.

As Aromsa, we are aware of the need to preserve natural water resources and not consume the clean water that future generations will need. Within the framework of our sustainability strategy, we focus on protecting natural resources, minimizing water consumption and recycling, and we develop projects on resource sustainability. While carrying out our activities within the scope of water and wastewater management, we take the Aromsa Climate and Water Policy as a basis and constantly update it according to developments.

As per the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we aim to increase efficiency in our water use, reduce our environmental impact, and set an example in the industry by developing innovative solutions.

The main water source for our factories operating in the Gebze Organized Industrial Zone within the Marmara Basin is the GOIZ supply line. Thanks to the well water treatment plant we commissioned in 2023, we have begun to utilize groundwater resources as a secondary water source. We allocate the necessary resources for the recycling of rainwater by installing rainwater collection systems in all our locations.

The increase in total water consumption over the years during the reporting period is due to the increased production capacity through our investments.

Ratio of Water Consumption to Production

(m3/ton production) 2022 2022 2024
Water Efficiency 7.95 7.81 7.38

Resource Usage Rates

(%) 2022 2022 2024
Mains Water 100 98 98
Rainwater - 1 2
Groundwater - 0 0

We regularly monitor the water consumption in our facilities and report water usage intensity using performance indicators. We monitor water consumption and resource use, set consumption reduction targets, and implement effective water and wastewater management for the protection of ecosystems.

As of the reporting period, we have set our goals to reduce our water consumption and created action plans to achieve these goals. We aim to reduce water use intensity per production line by 10% in 2025, compared to the baseline year of 2022, and to reduce mains water use with rainwater recovery systems. With the investments we make, we prevent water waste by using highly water-efficient equipment and automatic cleaning systems in our production processes.

Real-time water monitoring and efficiency measures

In our production processes, we save water and reduce the amount of wastewater by implementing practices such as using the final rinse water in the first wash, creating production sequences that require minimum cleaning during product changes, and optimizing cleaning cycles between production batches. As part of our water management approach designed to prevent waste generation, we create proactive maintenance plans and carry out regular maintenance by including faulty valves and leaking equipment in the production planning calendar.

Wastewater Management
The daily average of 200 m3 of wastewater generated as a result of our production processes is passed through our Company’s pre-treatment systems before being released into the environment and then discharged into the GOIZ Wastewater Treatment Plant sewer line. Purified water is checked through periodic analyses to ensure it conforms to environmental regulations. The efficiency of the GOIZ Wastewater Treatment Plant, which consists of physical, chemical and biological treatment, sludge drying and odour removal units, is monitored daily and confirmed by analyses conducted every 15 days within the scope of the environmental permit.

(m3) 2022 2022 2024
Wastewater Treatment 71,950 78,415 86,579

Our rainwater drainage is independent of wastewater. In order to prevent pollution of the receiving environment, we have emergency plans in place against the risk of any spill or leak and we ensure that routine spill drills are conducted.

As Aromsa, we continue our efforts to ensure that the rinsing and cleaning water used in production is also utilized in secondary areas of use. Our upcoming water efficiency and wastewater reduction goals include increasing the use of highly water-efficient equipment, installing real-time water consumption and wastewater analysis systems, setting annual target-based KPIs for all our factory buildings, calculating and verifying the ISO 14046 Water Footprint, and establishing a water management system. We will continue to implement the feedback and ideas conveyed by our employees by turning them into projects.
